As we continued down the road, we found the town of Évora, another medieval walled town where our goal was the Capela dos Ossos at the Igreja de São Francisco. There was a huge wedding in the church, so we didn't get to go inside.
However...
This did not disappoint .
There were plaques explaining how these monks lived a good life following the teachings of St Francis so they were OK with their bones being here .
After all, they are just bones. The ceilings are so pretty, It took me a while to see the fancy skull borders.
The bones of the original friars are in the sarcophagus near the altar.
I like how this is "...news to others..." just in case you were unaware that death awaits.
There is a lovely painted tile wall outside the entrance. These tiles are gifts for me all over Portugal. There are different tiles/colors/designs for different cities. Just amazing.
There are many clay Nativity scenes in the nearby museum, but this one beat them all.
And I have to give a shout out to people loving their chickens. I may need to have some chicken pets again...
The detail is incredible.
We also found this....is it here?? More research is needed.
A little sunshine.
A picturesque walk.
And a snack to tide us over for the drive south.
Another day well spent.
